And so it has begun. The proverbial ball is rolling and my little business is actually doing ok. I just revamped my workspace and now it is neat and tidy…(for now). And just when I get it all set I have to leave…
Onto the next, I am going to the Sunshine state this weekend, or at least trying to. I never thought planning a vacation was so difficult I will probably need another vacation after this one to relax. Hopefully we are going to spend some time with the family, the beach, and some friends.
I am super stoked (yeah I am a tool who uses the word stoked) to go to the beach. I am not super stoked to be seen in my swimsuit at the beach. Apparently pale Irish freckled pudgy isn’t in this season…damn. So I plan to do a little shopping maybe even show my husband some neat little places the tourists don’t know about. That is the plan so far, although I am not sure what else lady Florida will provide us. It might be nice to have some warm weather and not snow, but I guess I’ll take what I get and like it.

I admit it I love brand names. It might surprise you that I am not talking about Gucci or Prada (although some of their stuff is fabulous!). I like brand names on my food. I know I am a huge wanker. I mean to mean ketchup does not taste alike and I am a Heinz girl I always have been. But when it comes to clothing I do not care if it says Valentino or Walmart on the tag if it looks good on that’s all that matters to me.
The reason I bring this up today is simple. I sell handmade accessories in a small online store. It can take hours and days to complete a project, and even longer to come up with the idea. I wish people would appreciate this kind of work more. Now I know that sounds self promoting, but it is more for the appreciation of people who put their creative “juice” into their work and the pride in seeing someone wear your items or display them in their home.
So here is my eternal question, if it looks just as good and costs the same or even less who would you buy from?
Now that being said that I am a whore for Heinz (I should make a T-shirt for this…) I also love a good bargain. I love thrift stores and Walmart (I know my enemy). I love to save money, but I also love to suport local businesses and local artists. I think going into business for myself was a huge wake up call for me. I appreciate the love people put into their businesses whether they make headbands or serve pizza.
I vote for Handmade, but I sell handmade. I guess it’s what you like, what you can afford, and what you spend your money on.

So I finally found my calling. I started a small online store selling handmade accessories and wedding necessities and I love it. I know a lot of people use this term so I figured I would put it into perspective. I love my store like I would love a giant piece of extra chocolate fudge cake. I love my store like a fat kid loves this cake.
I will admit, my business is not exactly financially bringin home the bacon yet, but even though it seems others may not believe in me, I fully believe in myself.
I finally get all those small family owned restaurants and stores out there holding on in this big bad world of Walmarts. I understand the love you cultivate for your venture, and the anxiety of waiting for either failure or success.
I hope I am one of the success stories they print on Etsy, instead of of the sellers who laments why no sales seem to be coming in. I plan to put all of my efforts into this venture, I plan for success.
Enough moaning and groaning. Small business, big dreams. Everyone has them, and now so do I.

So I have a new workspace set up and of course I am biased, but I love it! It’s in our unfinished basement which means it’s colder than the North pole down there, but it’s pretty quiet and I have plenty of room for all of my stuff. The fact there there is hardly any walls is not a deterrent because it’s rent free!
The original plan was to turn the basement into a sports haven for my husband, but he has sacrificed for now and for that I love him! As a reward I have been spending countless hours down there, which lets him rock out in front of the big screen television.
This workspace/office has been discussed… ok I have been bragging and now my space has been dubbed my “woman cave” which I am actually ok with as long as I don’t have to paint everything pink. I have been updating my shop everyday in some way or another. It’s mostly wedding items, but also a few fun items too. Take a look and see what you think I need suggestions!!!

Morning all, Was woken up by the husband this morning at the crack, literally of dawn. Any earlier would have still been nighttime. So I figured I would make good use of it at get to work early.
So today I am working on getting my butt to the store, and on making a special pomander with sea shells. My mother got married last June on the beach and I feel that the majority of stuff they sell in the stores for beach weddings is a little cliche and bit too…beachy ..is that possible? So I am going to make this and see if I can help all those brides out there looking for that special something
. Well anyway heading to Michaels craft store soon to pick up butterflies to complete this beautiful bouquet for a garden type wedding. www.myhaleygirl.etsy.com
Wish me luck, I have seen the sun in days, because I have been in my now dubber “woman cave” or what I like to call my office which is in the basement. That and apparently Chicago is now Seattle but with snow, the sun does not come out here….ever it seems. Hoping to bring a little sun to someone today.
Till next time,
xoxo
